Chicken wings are just… AWESOME! Homemade chicken wings are even better. Or at least I think this recipe is. Just wait, by the time you try this you will be thinking the same thing. In this post, I am going to teach you how to make your own wings from the comfort of your own home.

homemade wings

Best homemade chicken wings recipe EVER! Courtesy of my husband, Ryan! He’s the absolute best, especially when it comes to making wings or putting anything on the grill.

This wings recipe taste, in my opinion, even better than the wings you would get in a restaurant! Why you ask? I will tell you.

Not only do you get the satisfaction of making the best wings in the comfort of your own home where you can watch whatever the hell you want (ballgames or movies) but they are typically bigger (more meat) and it will cost you less money, AND you can eat your back out with breaking the bank.

There are five of us so I will buy two packs between 4 to 5 lbs each. Sometimes I will pick up a third if one of the kids has a friend over. This is not only so we get our fill but so we also have leftovers afterward.

Oh man, you can reheat these babies in the air fryer and you would have thought they had been freshly made. YUM!

Unfortunately, I do not have a homemade hot sauce recipe. The sauce can make or break wings. I’m not a hot sauce kinda girl. However, my husband is and has sampled several different ones but usually will go back to the Hooter’s Hot Sauce you buy in the grocery store.

Teriyaki or BBQ is MY jam! If you can find Sweet Baby Ray’s Teriyaki sauce it’s amazeballs. We also love Sweet Baby Ray’s Original BBQ and the hubs like the Sweet and Spicy one.

That’s typically what the girls and myself will eat, one of those. My son , however, is a weirdo and will eat them plain. He loves wings so much. To the point of we have to take the plate away because he is literally sucking the bone. Yuck.

Enough sauce talk, let’s move on to how to make these amazing wings, shall we?

Recipe For Homemade Chicken Wings

  • 4-5 lb Family Pack of Wings (the size you are feeding will determine how many packs you buy. You will get close to 30 wings a pack. One pack will feed a family of 4 with NO leftovers)
  • Favorite Wing Sauce of choice (we use Hooter’s Hot Wing Sauce, Sweet Baby Ray’s Original BBQ, Sweet Baby Ray’s Teriyaki Sauce, and sometimes Sweet Baby Ray’s Sweet and Spicy)

Equipment To Make Wings

First things first, preheat your oven to 350° because you will bake your wings before we fry them.

Then line a couple of baking sheets with tinfoil.

Next, whip out your cutting board and either a sharp knife or some sharp kitchen shears.

If you want, feel free to wash, cut the fat off, and pat the chicken dry before moving on to the next step. OR be like the cool kids and go straight from the package to the cutting board because we don’t give a shit. I say all that with a shit-eating grin on my face as well (wink).

Now start taking one wing at a time and cut at the first joint to remove the wing tip. We just throw that piece away, but some may save them to make chicken broth.

Next, cut the second joint to separate the flat from the drum.

Place both pieces on your baking sheet. As you can see we like to separate them on the baking sheets but it’s totally not necessary. They all go in the same oven at the same temperature for the same amount of time. Moving on.

Once you have all of your wings cut and placed on their baking sheets place them in the oven at 350° for 20 minutes.

While they are cooking get your deep fryer out and let the oil start warming up. It should be set to 356°.

This is what they should look like when they are finished baking in the oven.

After your wings are finished baking and your deep fryer is ready to go, take anywhere from 13 to 18 wings and place them in the fry basket. Then slowly lower it into the oil, cover it with the lid and cook for 10 to 12 minutes. Do not overload it. You want to make sure all the wings get submerged in the oil.

For us and our fryer, we found the sweet spot to be 16 wings for 10 minutes.

While your wings are cooking line a large plate or platter or pan or just whatever with paper towel, once they are finished frying this is where you will dump them out before coating them in your favorite wing sauce.

This is what they should look like, a beautiful golden brown.

Get a decent-sized bowl and place the wings inside and cover with whatever sauce you choose. For this round, we went with BBQ (Sweet Baby Ray’s).

Then give them a good toss or stir or whatever is easier for you so that they don’t get tossed out onto the floor. As you can see one or two have gotten away from us in the past, hints why you see a furry foot in one of the pictures. That bitch is just waiting to see if Daddy will have a slip-up and a wing go flying.

Just make sure you coat all the wings and keep them in the bowl at the same time, haha.

That’s it, that’s all you have to do to make homemade chicken wings the Scamehorn way.

Once they are coated in your favorite sauce they are ready to be devoured. Just repeat the deep fryer steps until you have all of your wings fried.

Whatever you don’t eat just save it in either an air-tight container or a zip-lock bag. They heat up great in an air fryer.

We have yet to skip the deep fryer and use just the air fryer strictly for the “frying” part so I’d just suggest the same temp and cook time if you go the air fryer route vetoing the unhealthy deep fryer route.

However, to REHEAT your wings in the air fryer just set it on 365° and cook for about 6-8 minutes. They will taste crispy like you just made them for the first time.

Here is my son tearing up his wings for lunch the next day. He’s so cute!

Enjoy!
