A Hot Dog in a Blanket is when you take a hot dog and wrap it in a biscuit. Then bake it in the oven until the biscuit is cooked all the way through and golden brown. Most people call this a pig in a blanket and use the lil smokies. I like to supersize them by using hot dogs. In this post, I am going to show you how to make pigs in a blanket with hot dogs. Hints the name, hot dog in a blanket.

hot dog in a blanket

Best pigs in a blanket recipe ever!

Growing up we always call this kid-friendly meal pigs in a blanket. It wasn’t until recently my little family of five started to call it hot dog in a blanket.

You can thank my son for that name, his lack of memory, and how cute it was when he called it hot dog in a blanket. Therefore, the name stuck.

Did you know that there is actually a holiday for pigs in a blanket? YES! April 24th is National Pig In A Blanket Day. However, I tend to celebrate and chow down on pigs in a blanket more times a year than just the one celebrated holiday.

Most people typically make this into an appetizer using the little cocktail wienies wrapped in crescent rolls. Not me. For one, that is just too much work for me, and two, I like to make these a meal.

Pigs in a blanket are too yummy to be made into just an “appeteaser”. You just keep going back for more regardless so why not just make this into dinner instead by supersizing them, haha?

Did I mention that this is one of those meals you can have ready in about 30 minutes? Hell yes, you can! OH, and it is only made with three ingredients as well. If you veto the cheese then it’s really only two ingredients. But cheese makes just about everything taste better!

If you are lactose intolerant, my condolences.

Also, you should know this is a how to make pigs in a blanket WITHOUT crescent rolls recipe. Yep, this is a recipe using canned biscuits. NumNums!

Let’s get started and jump into the pigs in a blanket recipe with hot dogs, shall we?!

Hot Dog In A Blanket

  • 8-pk Bun Length Hot Dogs
  • 2-4 Slices American Sandwich Cheese
  • 8-ct Canned Biscuits

First, you will need to preheat your oven to 375°. Then line a baking sheet with tin foil and spray it with nonstick spray.

Next, you will need a cutting board or big plate and a knife. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a sharp knife. You can definitely cut hot dogs easily with a butter knife.

I like to open my 8-pack of hot dogs and line them all up on either one of my cutting boards or a big plate. For this post, I used my cute little cutting board and four dogs at a time so it didn’t look overly crowded. I don’t know why, it just seemed like a good idea at the time. Ha!

With your knife cut a slice down the middle of each hot dog. Be sure to not cut them in complete half. Cut them just enough that you are able to spread them apart so you can add slices of cheese to the center.

quick meals with biscuits

This next step is totally optional. If you do not care for cheese or you are lactose intolerant then it’s probably best you skip this step.

Open one of your slices of cheese and fold it so it creates 4 rectangular slices.

Now, take that cheese and add one to two slices to the center of your cut hot dog.

If you like lots of cheese then I recommend using at least two rectangles per hot dog like I did. But if you are a minimalist then go for just the one.

Now comes the fun part. Open your can of biscuits and one by one slowly start taking it from a round biscuit to a long flat strip of not so fluffy dough. You want it long enough so it is able to wrap around your hot dog from one end to the other.

Just look at the picture below. It’s easier to show you than explain it haha.

Now, carefully wrap your biscuit around your hot dog and make it look like a big uncircumcised penis. Because that’s exactly what it looks like once you are done wrapping and smooshing the seams together. And don’t pretend like that didn’t cross your mind either. HaHa!

Once you have assembled all of your hot dogs in a blanket, place them on your baking sheet.

It looks like a pan full of dicks, I’m sorry but it does.

Bake your pan of dicks, I mean hot dogs in a blanket at 375° for 20 to 25 minutes. In my oven, I found 22 minutes is the perfect amount of time. Yours may be different. It just depends on the oven. Keep an eye on them once they hit around the 20-minute mark and pull them out once the biscuits are golden brown.

That’s it, my friend. A simple dinner in 30 minutes for all you busy moms out there (and dads). They may look like a bunch of dicks on a pan but I assure you they are anything but. And taste way better (wink).

As for sides go, I like to heat up a can of baked beans along with tossing a few potato chips on the plate. Dipping your hot dog in a blanket into the baked beans makes it that much more delicious. It’s not for everyone. But don’t knock it till you try it.

If you like easy meals, here are a few of my favorite go-to dinners I make on the regular. And yes even the kids will like them (because what kid doesn’t like chicken):
